What's In Our Soap

From Our Soap Kitchen

Every word on the label, explained

We think you should be able to read a soap label and understand every word on it. So here's the whole story, from the oils in the pot to the last curl of lavender on top.

Two Lines, One Soap Kitchen

Pick your kind of bar

Some people want soap as close to the earth as it gets. Others want a bar that smells like a pumpkin patch or an old cathedral. We make both, and we keep them clearly labeled so you never have to guess.

100% Natural

The Signature Collection

Our earth-first line. If it didn't grow, get dug from the ground, or come from the farm, it isn't in here.

  • Scent comes only from essential oils like lavender, lemongrass, eucalyptus, pink grapefruit, rosemary, and vanilla absolute, or there's no scent at all
  • Color comes from clay, turmeric, or charcoal. Never dye.
  • Farm extras like goat milk, honey, and colloidal oatmeal
  • Zero fragrance oils, zero mica

Made for Fun

The Artisan Series & The Vault

This is our creative side. We use the same handmade base, then add scents and colors that nature can't give us on its own.

  • Skin-safe fragrance oils for scents like coffee, oud, rose, and seasonal blends
  • Cosmetic micas and oxides for deep color and shimmer
  • Limited Vault drops that don't come back once they're gone
  • Every ingredient listed, same as always

Decode the Label

Soap names, in plain English

Soap labels list oils by their saponified names, meaning what each oil turns into once it becomes soap. It sounds like chemistry because it is. Here's what the words actually mean.

On the Label
What It Is & Why It's There
Sodium Olivate
Olive oil. The mild, skin-friendly heart of every bar.
Sodium Tallowate
Tallow. An old-fashioned soapmaking fat that makes a firm, creamy bar that lasts.
Sodium Cocoate
Coconut oil. This is where the fluffy, bubbly lather comes from.
Sodium Sweet Almondate
Sweet almond oil. Adds a silky, soft-skin finish.
Sodium Castorate
Castor oil. A small amount keeps the lather rich and long-lasting.
Sodium Citrate
A salt made from citric acid. It helps the soap rinse clean, even in hard water.
Sodium Chloride
Plain salt. A pinch makes the bar harder so it lasts longer in your shower.

Everything after the base, like essential oils, clays, and botanicals, is listed on each bar's product page.

How It's Made

Slow soap, on purpose

We cold-process every batch, the traditional way. It takes longer, but the bar you get is better for it.

1

Weigh

Each oil is weighed by hand for every batch.

2

Blend

We mix in essential oils or fragrance, clays, and botanicals.

3

Pour

The batter goes into molds. Swirl bars get layered by hand.

4

Cut

Each loaf is sliced into generous bars, close to 6 oz fresh off the knife.

5

Cure

Bars rest for several weeks and firm up, so the one you get is harder, milder, and usually still over 5 oz.

A Bonus You Can Feel

The glycerin stays in

When oils turn into soap, they make glycerin, a natural moisturizer, all on their own. Big manufacturers often take it out and sell it separately. We keep all of it in the bar, which is a big reason handmade soap feels so different on your skin.

The Botanical Cabinet

What we add from there

Earth Clays

French green, French caramel, purple Brazilian, and kaolin clays give the bars slip and soft, natural color.

From the Farm

Goat milk, raw honey, and colloidal oatmeal make the lather creamier and gentler.

Spice & Root

Turmeric adds a warm gold color. Activated charcoal turns the bars a deep, dramatic black.

Flowers & Grounds

Whole lavender buds on top, and coffee grounds for a gentle scrub.

Never on Our Shelf

This is real soap

A lot of what's sold as "soap" at the store is actually a detergent bar. Ours is the real thing: oils turned into soap, and nothing to stretch it.

Signature Collection bars also leave out fragrance oils, micas, and dyes entirely.

Asked in Our Inbox

Your ingredient questions

Is your soap vegan?

No. Our body bars are made with tallow, which is an animal fat. Some bars also have goat milk or honey. Our Scullery dish bar is made from plant oils only.

Which bar is best for sensitive skin?

Start with The Bare Bar, which is completely unscented, or The Nourish Bar with oatmeal, goat milk, and honey and no added fragrance.

Where can I see a bar's full ingredients?

Every product page lists the complete ingredients. If you have allergies or sensitive skin, check the list first and test a small spot of skin before regular use.
